Emergency Alert Notifications
The City of Blair has partnered with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department to implement the AlertSense Mass Notification System. This system provides a county-wide, unified alert system to quickly notify the public in times of emergency, such as snow emergencies, boil orders, or other critical situations. We strongly encourage all residents to sign up for this free service to stay informed when it matters most. While there is no cost for alerts, standard text messaging rates may apply. Additionally, all weather-related alerts are automatically issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For those who prefer mobile notifications based on their location, the myAlerts mobile app is also available for download.
Emergency Alert Notification Sign-Up: Website vs. Mobile App
Staying informed during emergencies is crucial. With AlertSense, you have two ways to receive notifications—by signing up on the website or by using the myAlerts mobile app. Here’s how they differ:
Signing Up on the Website
By registering on the website, you can choose to receive emergency alerts via email, text message, or phone call—or all three. These alerts are sent based on your home location and the alert group you select (Arlington, Blair, Fort Calhoun, Herman, Kennard, or Washington). This means you’ll receive important notifications even if you're out of town.
- Click on the link below the AlertSense picture above to take you to the website to sign up.
- Follow instructions to submit your information
- Click green button stating "Sign Up"
- Enter your information
- It is important to put your address in as this will help tailor alerts pertinent to your location compared to generalized notifications. Also helps prevent un-needed notifications.
- Select Notification group (Arlington, Blair, Fort Calhoun, Herman, Kennard, Washington)
- Select the weather alerts you would like to receive
- Select weather voice calls you would like to receive
- Click the agree to the terms of use and check you are not a robot.
- Sign me up.
- Enter the confirmation code that was sent to your email and you are all set.
- You can always change your preferences at any time, by going back to sign up page and clicking green button "Modify or Unsubscribe"
Using the myAlerts Mobile App
The myAlerts app provides real-time alerts based on your current location. Unlike the website sign-up, the app does not require registration—it simply delivers notifications for emergencies happening where you are at that moment. However, if you travel outside the area, you will not receive alerts from your home community.
Which Option is Best for You?
If you want to stay informed about emergencies in your home community, even when traveling, signing up on the website is the best choice.
If you need real-time alerts wherever you go, the app is a great addition.
For complete coverage, consider both options to ensure you never miss an important alert.
